What are
the Vedas?
The Vedas are India's oldest texts and among the
world's oldest. There are four—Rig, Yajur, S ama,
and Atharva Veda. The word "Veda" means
"knowledge" in Sanskrit. They contain hymns,
prayers, and songs, originally passed down orally
for generations before being written. The Rig Veda,
the oldest, was composed in the ancient Sapta
Sindhava region, though its exact date is unknown.
